Back in college my roommates (Les Tigres and Reds included) and I used to spend hours talking about retired players that were either great, awful, or known for something.
I figured I'd bring that fun game of ours to the board and see what we can conjure up in terms of players from even the mid-90's (I was born in 86, so forgive me since that's what I consider the glory days of my childhood)
I'll start.
Jon Nunnally Mr. Injury Rusty Greer Matt Anderson Jeff Zimmerman Dan Pleasac Grahame Lloyd Jorge Toca Alay Soler Keith Lockheart Walt Weiss Nefi Perez Bubba Trammell Scott Sauerbeck Eddie Taubensee Darrel May Omar Daal Dennis Tankersley Chris original corked bat Sabo

Growing up a Red Sox fan, I fell hard for both Phil Plantier and Sam Horn. Was WAY OFF on both those guys.
Sam was a real life version of Pedro Cerrano but built like Cecil Fielder. He hit fastball very much, but curveball bats afraid.
I always loved Tim Naehring too. He was a helluva ballplayer that couldn't stay healthy.

Growing up in my lifetime it was ALLLLL about these guys: Barry Bonds-OF Sammy Sosa-OF Mark McGwire-1B
So the steriod era, as they say women dig the long ball. I can remember a Marlin Game I was watching and Big Mac killed it dead away centerfield. "530 was the HR length I belive? It is still the longest HR in Dolphin Stadium History.

Carlos Quintana.
Didn't he fall out of a moving truck? God those 80s and 90s Red Sox teams sucked.

I never liked Coop because I always loved watching Boggs hit.
For some reason I've always remembered Naehring fondly. He was a bad ass from what I can remember. Maybe it was just because he wore those big wrap around sunglasses.
I realize we're dating ourselves here with these long gone Red Sox.

A few Mets that were some personal favorites (not that any were great during their stins)
Tony Phillips Jeff Duncan Esix Snead
And position players moving to the mound both past and present (inspired by a thing i saw on bbtf): Obviously now Lance Neikro and Ben Davis Back in the day Brooks Kieshnick
Two of my favorite Orioles (Since I didn't know better at the time): Jeff Reboulet Chris Hoiles
And speaking of O's catchers: Brook Fordyce Geronimo Gil

I loved dudes like Bip Robert and especially Tony Phillips, the move-around-the-diamond guys.
I also dug rangy CFers like Brian McRae and Steve Finley.
Going back to when I was in short pants, I dug me some white second basemen, guys like Tommy Herr, Billy Doran and the Mariners' Jack Perconte. I also really dug Tony Fernandez when he was w/ the Blue Jays, and Spike Owen & Dave Henderson, even after they left Seattle.
In terms of superstars, Eric Davis, Will Clark and Don Mattingly were my big heroes before Ken Griffey Jr came along. I guess I was around 15 when Junior and his dad were playing the outfield together.
I thought Dave Stewart was a total badass.
In terms of Mariners, I'll always have a soft spot for Edgar Martinez.
The great thing about Griffey Jr was that he was like making up for all the failed prospects and young guys we had as a kid, or the guys we dealt (or would end up dealing) for nothing; Danny Tartabull, Phil Bradley, Darnell Coles, Ivan Calderon, Jim Presley, Matt Moore, Erik Hanson, Eric Anthony, Mike Hampton, Billy Swift, Varitek, Lowe, Jose Cruz Jr, etc.
I will always hate Bobby Ayala.

My favorite player as a kid was Eric Davis.. Speed, Power, made everything look effortless. As a sox fan, i was a huge Wade Boggs fan.. I dont think any redsox fan didnt like Tim Naehring, to bad his knees were shot. Throw Nick Esasky and Tom Brunansky into the list of older players too

TT, where in the hell are you from, and where do you live now?It sounds like you are from the Northwest, but I can't believe in all our trade talks, this never came up. Do you remember my first "hometown" childhood baseball idol - Bob Stinson?

I grew up in Enumclaw, WA, a tiny town about an hour and a half southeast of Seattle, now most famous for producing the the NASCAR racer Kasey Kahne and for being the place where a guy died from being screwed by a horse.
I live in Durham, NC right now (finishing up a Ph.D. at Duke).
Bob Stinson I barely, barely remember -- I actually got excited at first, because I thought of Bob Kearney, the young Wilfred Brimley looking backup catcher from the late 80s. Ah, that makes me think of Dave Valle, Pete O'Brien, Glenn Wilson. Good times.
When I was about 6, I loved Bruce Bocht and Ruppert Jones.
Where did you grow up?

more than this, I specifically remember in my town's local newspaper, on Sunday, they would list all of the league leaders, and I would study it for hours, then ask my dad to quiz me on who was on the list.....memories....

I love Enumclaw, rode through there on my bicycle this summer.
I basically grew up at the Kingdome, especially those first few years in the late 70's, early 80's.
"Ruuuuuuuuu" (Jones), our first All-Star was a fan favorite, so was "Bruuuuuuuuuce" (Bochte), our only All-Star another year.
Speaking of O'Brien, I liked him in Texas but then he came here and sucked. He must of left the Roids back in Texas.

God I hated Gator with a passion.
I remember being Little League age and being totally convinced I could strike Greenwell out. All you got to do is NOT throw the 1st pitch anywhere near the plate and he's swinging for strike one. Then, steady diet of breaking balls in the dirt and he's headed back to the dugout.
even before Sabermetrics, there were just some players that didn't get how to play the game.
Greenwell will forever be my didn't get it guy.
