DRAFT RETRO
2010
Jessie Biddle, LHP - Had a strong full season debut with a 2.98 ERA and 8.4 K/9 as a 19 year old in A Ball. Big lefty with a big fastball and lots of projection. Drafted out of HS.
Jake Thompson, RHP - Thompson had a weird season in 2011. 2.90 ERA but only 4.4 K/9. College righty with good scouting reports and good stats beyond the K rate.
Cory Vaughn, OF - Son of Greg Vaughn. Hit well in A ball to begin the season but struggled after a promotion to A+. Scouting reports say he's a 5 tool player that evokes images of his father. Has had a solid OBP as a pro, hoping the power catches up and the late season slump was just an adjustment period.
David Filak, RHP - D-II, big body righty with two plus pitches. Atlanta drafty with impressive pro debut. 2011 was a different story. Filak was awful in 2011. RELEASED.
Daniel Tillman, RHP - Another small college guy with a big arm. Tillman is a fastball/slider bullpen guy that gets high marks for his mound demeanor and command of two plus pitches. He ranked as the Pioneer League #3 prospect in 2010 while King 13.92 per 9. Moved to full time relief in 2011. Tillman dominated in A ball before getting a taste of A+ at the end of the season. Could move quickly from there.
Leon Landry, OF - well rounded CF prospect with a good eye and some pop. Needs to stick in CF. Struggled in 2011, although he came on at the end. Showing solid D and little else. RELEASED.
Loaded up on pitching and college OFers in 2010 but that was more by chance than design. No sense even prognosticating at this point but there is a lot of upside here.
2009
Dustin Ackley - Traded to get Ackley #2 overall. Started off slow again in 2011 but went on a tear that carried Ackley to Seattle. Reports on his defense have steadily improved. Looks like a future star.
Alex White - Questions about his ability to start have quieted. White dominated in the minors but struggled in the majors. He will probably take some time to adjust but he looks like a solid pro pitcher.
Traded away most of my picks but got some high upside college players who should help quickly. Probably my best draft.
2008
Tim Beckham - Prospect stock is up in 2011 after two miserable years. I trusted the TB scouting department when I drafted him but its doubtful that he ever lives up to his draft status.
Jake Odorizzi - Super athletic high school draftee. Was very good in 2010 and even better in 2011. He destroyed A+ ball and held his own in AA as a 21 year old. A personal favorite and the only player I've held onto from this draft. I have consistently valued him much higher than any of the prospect lists and its starting to pay off.
Will Smith - Smith had a big debut but some of the shine wore off in 2009 but a change in scenery got him back on track in 2010. Was solid but unspectacular in 2011. Still very projectable, could be a back of the rotation starter. Traded in a package for Derek Jeter.
Zeke Spruill - Big righty had a big first year but struggled in 2010. He bounced back in 2011, pitching very well in AA. Starting to look like a major league pitcher. Traded in package for Carlos Guillen.
I went heavy on HS and JC picks in 2008. It's too early to tell but Odorizzi is starting to look like a top of the rotation starter and all of these guys appear to be heading to the big leagues.
2007
Devon Mesoraco - exploded in 2010. Unfortunately after all the suck he threw onto the field I released him during the preseason. He is now enjoying his renaissance in another team's uniform. Was even better in 2011 and is now arguably the top catching prospect in baseball and looks to be the starting C in Cinci heading into 2012. This one stings.
Andrew Brackman - Looks like a bust at this point.
Brian Rike - Loved his college numbers and his debut. He's been mediocre at best since and doesn't appear to have much of a pro future.
Damon Sublett - Released. Never matched his debut. He's now an OF with some OBP skills but little power.
Steven Hill - Traded. Still putting up numbers but getting little love from scouts. He's moved from catcher to COF/COH. Looks like if he's going to carve out a career it will be as a righty bat off the bench that can catch in a pinch.
Pretty lousy draft exacerbated by the fact that I released the only prospect before he exploded.
2006
Chris Marrero - Marrero can hit but doesn't look to have the power that he was drafted on. Washington gave him a look at the end of 2011. Traded for Chase Headley.
Wes Hodges - Doesn't look he'll have the glove to be much of an asset off the bench in the pros and the bat doesn't play as a starter. Traded.
Chad Tracy - Moved off catcher soon after turning pro. Beginning to look like a minor league slugger. Hit the ball well in AAA in 2010. Traded.
Mark Melancon - Is now the Astros closer and has done a good job. Released.
Zech Zinicola - Released. Followed a stellar college career at ASU with an incredibly mediocre pro career to this point.
Melancon is likely to be the best player from this draft.
